Coinbase L2-Protocol has implemented Flashblocks technology in a twist, reducing the time of creating a block from 2 seconds to 200 ms. The launch of the update in the main network is expected in the II quarter of 2025.

Two tools are also presented: Appchains and Smart Wallet Sub Accounts.

⏺Appchains are custom -made blockchains created on top of BASE. They function as L3-protocols based on OP Stack and provide a selected block space for scaling applications. They have their own parameters, including gas tokens and the logic of commissions.

⏺smart Wallet Sub Accounts will allow users to control several wallets through a single interface.

Flashblocks

Flashblocks is an innovative technology developed by the Base Layer-2 team in cooperation with the Flashbots research group. It is aimed at a significant increase in the speed of the blockchain.

The main characteristics of Flashblocks:

• Significant reduction in block processing time: from 2 seconds to 200 milliseconds
• Improving network delay
• Increasing the limb of the blocks

It is important to note that the introduction of Flashblocks from Layer-2 Base is part of a larger Base L2 network update, which also includes:

• Appchains (Framwork Layer-3 for high load applications)
• Smart Wallet Sub Accounts (function for simplifying identification management)

However, there are certain risks:

• The possibility of the appearance of orphan blocks
• Potential threats of the centralization of the network
• The need for additional study of safety issues

Flashblocks technology is especially useful for applications requiring high transactions processing and low network delay.
